Vietnam left quite the distaste of those in power who throw away the lives of grunts when they know things aren't going to work. But the lesson to learn form that is don't get into wars to start with. Its a fatal mistake to think that once you are in a war, there must somewhere be a solution you can believe in that will still let you win. The only winning in these two wars is getting out. It will be very interesting to see if Gates actually sticks his neck out and articulates what he thinks would have been a winning strategy.
