Well, for one thing, neither Turkey nor Syria (they have a larger Kurd population than Iran) would have agreed to your proposal. There has been a very long history of people divvying up the land in that area in various ways, thinking that this way or that way would "make sense" or would be in the national interest of ... usually of course the people who are doing the dividing. And, what a shock, it never works out for the best.

Second, Kurdestan would have the Curse of Big Oil times 2 or 3. An oil rich country where the oil would overwhelm every other aspect of the country. So far, I think Norway might be only country where a preponderance of oil wealth has been used in a way that actually aided the population of the country. All other cases I can think of offhand have resulted in a great deal of corruption and problems that continue to fester.
