Ford To Proliferate Aluminum Across Lineup -- CEO
By Mike Ramsey

DETROIT-- Ford Motor Co. will use aluminum throughout its lineup, said Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally, in comments with reporters following the debut of the auto maker's aluminum-bodied F-150 pickup Monday.

"You are going to see it proliferate across our lineup," Mr. Mulally said.

Ford showed journalists the 2015 F-150 at the North American International Auto Show, kicking off the day's unveilings. The use of aluminum for the body will reduce the weight of the vehicle by about 700 pounds and enable the use of a smaller lineup of engines that can make the truck more fuel efficient.

Ford will begin selling the truck late this year and has revealed only small details about its performance, promising it will be more powerful, faster accelerating and more durable than the current model.

Ford began working on the truck in 2009 and chose aluminum to replace steel as a means to improve performance and hit rising fuel-economy standards. Because of the size of the investment to switch from steel to aluminum, Ford is intent on ensuring the investment is used in other vehicles.

Likely it would be used on larger models, where weight reduction is most important.

Separately, Mr. Mulally said he was "relieved" to get the "speculation" about being a candidate for the chief executive role at Microsoft Corp. behind him. Mr. Mulally last week said he wasn't a candidate for the position.
