Mohan,
I read with interest your post re: cultural and economic convergences
and in particular was struck by your question relating to motives.

The great thinker Adam Smith wrote one the most provocative
statements that surely can be applied on a global basis.

"It is not from the benevolence of
the butcher, the brewer, or the baker
that we expect our dinner...
but from their regard to their self-interest.
We address ourselves, not to their humanity,
but to their self-love, and never talk to them
of our necessities, but of their advantages."

ADAM SMITH
