By its nature, religion is bowing to an imaginary world of supernatural existence--all the elements of which are inspired by hopes and fears and constructed strictly by the imagination. In this sense, there is little to confuse the modern believer with the primitive adherent.

Certainly, there is a great deal more dogma accumulated over centuries to impress the modern person of superstitious bent. However, it serves him little as he relies mainly on his visceral sense of dread accompanied by the terrified "worship" of a powerful and all so dangerous "Father" figure. What amuses me is their attempt to distance themselves from the "primitive" belief that human vitality and power can be ingested and that attributes of power, courage, etc. can be transferred in this primitive fashion. After all, they are proud to make human sacrifice the very linchpin of their entire canon of conviction.

Our kids (with their love of gaming) did not invent the idea that one could absorb super powers from others by eating them! Our religious mythology and our actual history is replete with examples.
