Good question, F. Why hasn't the US sold au--because it's a hedge. The Fed. will start buying gold soon enough and end up selling US dollars back to the foreign markets by way of those sales. Greenspan has, by his own admission, been a long-time believer in the gold standard. When sales (of U.S.dollars)start depends on how squeezed the US economy gets - IMO things are happening more quickly than anyone could have imagined even 36mo. ago so you could see net gold purchases quite soon - If Greenspan wants the price of gold to go up, it'll go up..
