Anyone that converts has something to prove and usually goes over-board. I know a 6'5 red headed Irish Canadian that married a little Jewish woman but had to convert to orthodox Judaism to do it. He went completely over the top in observation of his new faith to the point he is a pain in the ass to other Jews and lectures them on how to be a Jew. The girl that converted to Catholicism in your story was simply rebelling against her parents which is normal. The Catholic girl in my story was rebelling by converting to Islam which again is quite normal. When Stalin converted to Communism which is also a type of religion he had to go over the top of what Lenin did with more killing and more purging.
