You could have used automatic and let the camera think for you. But nooo, you had to be the hero.

Can't really do that shooting the moon, been there failed at that. Auto will expose for the landscape, and you lose all detail in the moon. Only way I've found is keep playing with exposure until you get something that works. The other issue with a full moon is that the sun is rising as the moon is setting. Shoot too early and you can get detail in the moon but the landscape is black; nothing. Shoot too late and the landscape is fine but the moon is bland. So I figure you've got about 4-5 minutes when everything is good. You better have a plan on composition, and the light changes fast so you have to keep bracketing exposure.
