Gore Orders Continued Effort To Expand Access To HIV Drugs

WESTPORT, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Efforts to expand access to antiretroviral drugs to all HIV-infected Americans who need them are not over, Vice President Al Gore said yesterday, according to a statement posted on US Newswire.

In April, Vice President Gore directed the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) and the Office of National AIDS Policy to examine the feasibility of expanding Medicaid coverage to include antiretroviral drugs for asymptomatic HIV-positive recipients. However, last week HCFA announced that this could not be done in a "budget-neutral" matter, as required for demonstration projects. Currently, Medicaid covers antiretroviral drugs only for AIDS patients.

"I am extremely disappointed that they could not find a way to achieve our goal through this mechanism," Vice President Gore continued. "But reports that this marks the end of our efforts are mistaken. In fact, I am directing the Department of Health and Human Services and Office of National AIDS Policy to continue to work on ways to expand access to life-saving drug therapy for people living with HIV and AIDS."

Vice President Gore reaffirmed the Administration's commitment to "...work with Congress, patient advocates, states, pharmaceutical manufacturers and others to find innovative ways to provide access to these life-saving therapies."
