Smartphone sales ought to be down in the UK and Germany, and in other EU member states as well. They're in a continuing recession brought on by austerity policies that are continuing at present. However, what is happening in the EU does not necessarily affect smartphone demand in Africa, the Middle East, India, China, and Latin America. Of course, if the EU were resuming economic growth instead of continued recession, overall demand for smartphones would increase elsewhere as well.

One should not use data from two European states in recession as a proxy for the health of the worldwide smartphone market.

1) I think that most consider UK and Germany economies to be healthier this year than last.

2) Neither market is fully saturated so there should still be growth within smartphones even if total handset sales are hit by the economy.

3) What is your explanation for Verizon smartphone sales declining by 10%? It wasnt share loss. They saw a substantial decline in their upgrade rate.

None of this is a read through to developing markets. It is however possible that these three data points are representative of the US and Western Europe. The value of both of those markets is substantially higher than represented by their unit share.
