Hi J_F_Shepard; Re: "But PhD candidates? Hell I could name a dozen who wrote papers in physics that made them very famous.";

Here's your list:

(1) Felix Bloch: Establishes the quantum theory of solids using Bloch waves with his PhD thesis, 1928.
(2) Neils Bohr: Wins gold medal for measuring surface tension of water in 1905. Published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society (of London). Gets his MS degree in 1909, PhD in 1911.
(3) Satyendra Nath Bose: Creates Bose-Einstein statistics (half of the field of quantum statistics) in 1924. His name is the source of the word "bosons" now used for particles like photons and the Higgs. He had an MS degree.
(4) Léon_Brillouin: His PhD thesis was the quantum theory of crystalline solids, 1920.
(5) Louis de Broglie: His PhD thesis establishes the quantum relationship between waves and particles, 1924.
(6) Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar: Invents theory of degenerate stars in his PhD thesis, 1933. The "Chandrasekhar limit" is the maximum size of a star that does not become a black hole
(7) Leon Cooper. PhD thesis in 1954 is the modern explanation of superconductivity, now called "Cooper pairs".
(8) Marie Curie: Publishes 30+ papers in 1898-1902 before getting PhD in 1903.
(9) Richard Dalitz: PhD thesis 1953 shows pion can decay into a photon and electron-positron pair. These are now called a "Dalitz pair".
(10) Albert Einstein published first paper in Annalen der Physik in 1901. Gets PhD in 1905.
(11) Enrico Fermi publishes a half dozen papers, including the invention of "Fermi coordinates" before getting his PhD in 1922.
(12) Richard Feynman's thesis was the invention of Feynman diagrams, 1942.
