Lovely myth. A muskrat can dive and stay submerged for 20 minutes--plenty of time to retrieve dirt from the ocean floor. And patient turtle has always been a friend... (and, of course, because the Muskrat will usually surface in an entirely different spot--ancient people would have been quite comfortable giving him as much time as he needed!). Mythology is a rare and wonderful sort of poetry...
