I pay more attention to the practical & whats fundamental in the context of the now vs older timeframes, you know very well how many things have changed since a Sinclair Lewis was writing. Look about you, interacial & interfaith marriages, integration of a very pluralistic society, women in politics and up the workplace (& perhaps our next president) and kids having access to more information about the world, its other inhabitants, biology, physiology, than even imaginable 80yrs ago.

There's much good change out there along with still a great deal of that which is still medieval & backward, there's not that much disagreement about what is moral & good, in fact there are reality shows all the time now that deal with human morality, excellence in performance, from the arts, sciences & sports world, like our steroid use among pro atheletes to the much needed banking regulation.

You keep talking about this morality from above, we see it shaping up & posed all the time tight in front of all our collective views, its not just the religious sphere. And what is the root of all evil? Same as it ever was, our ego, the selfish crowns we all wear, carry around inside our personas, our want of more things, money, to out compete & get caught up in a race that sacrifices our very lives in the pursuits of these self addictions.

What is important in life? Very simple fundmental things, always in the end one would call it a savoring of the moment, deep appreciation & always fresh learning. Compassion & caring, tolerance & slowing this madness down a bit , but hard to do with such huge populations and age extension.
