This is not one of the important unproven math equations. If you want to work on some, you might buy one of the books that list them. Here's a search on Amazon to get you started:

Whoever wrote the thing you saw didn't write it to give you a correct impression on the importance of the research. Like they say in Texas, never let the truth get in the way of a good story. What they did was give you a fictionalized version of the story.

Mathematicians prove stuff for a living (more or less). They do it every week, week in and week out. It's like digging ditches but more high brow. Every now and then they get a proof that other people are interested in and they publish it.

And yes, my paycheck is from the physics department at a big university. Beyond that I won't say anything, I value my anonymity.
