Significant CO2 hasn't been put into the air until roughly 1950. Here's a chart. Note that the chart of interest is in red and it began its significant rise around 1950:

As you can see above, CO2 net flux around 1945 was lower than the flux around 1880. Hence global warming didn't really begin until around 1950. It takes time to warm things up.

On the other hand, if you're going to claim that the *small* amount of CO2 we put into the air before 1950 made the planet warm significantly, then you've put yourself in deeper water in trying to explain away the pause.
