HK Telecom in U.S.-China cable link deal Reuters Story - December 11, 1997 05:16 %EL %HK 0008.HK 0941.HK T MCIC FON 9431.T 9432.T SBC TGO.TO TLSCAX V%REUTER P%RTR HONG KONG, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Hong Kong Telecommunications Ltd said on Thursday it had signed an agreement with 13 of the world's leading telecommunications companies to build the first undersea fiber-optic cable network linking China and the U.S. The 16,000-mile China-U.S. cable network, with a total investment of US$1 billion, would serve as the primary conduit for international long-distance traffic between the U.S. and Asia-Pacific region, it said. With a total capacity of 80 gigabits per second, the system would be capable of carrying one million phone calls at the same time.
