HK Telecom in U.S.-China cable link deal

HONG KONG, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Hong Kong Telecommunications
Ltd said on Thursday it had signed an agreement with 13 of the
world's leading telecommunications companies to build the first
undersea fiber-optic cable network linking China and the U.S.
The 16,000-mile China-U.S. cable network, with a total
investment of US$1 billion, would serve as the primary conduit
for international long-distance traffic between the U.S. and
Asia-Pacific region, it said.
With a total capacity of 80 gigabits per second, the system
would be capable of carrying one million phone calls at the same
time.
Apart from Hongkong Telecom, the consortium included China
Telecomn , AT&T Corp , MCI Communications Corp
, Sprint Corp , Kokusai Denshin Denwa ,
Nippon Telephone & Telegraph , Korea Telecom, ITDC, SBC
Communications Inc , SingTel, Telecom Malaysia, Teleglobe
and Telsra .
