11-year-old Girl’s Cupcake Business Shut Down by Health Department
Crony Chronicles by Crony Chronicles Team

An 11 year old entrepreneur in Illinois has had her first experience with the country’s regulatory red tape. The sixth grade girl was making $200 a month selling cupcakes made out of her family’s kitchen. Then, after an article highlighting her success appeared in the local newspaper, officials from the county health department shut her down. The girl’s family, who were willing to obtain the necessary permits for her to continue, were told that they would either need to purchase a bakery or build a second kitchen.

“Amy Yeager, a health department spokeswoman, said the county was only applying the law governing all food-selling businesses. ‘The rules are the rules. It’s for the protection of the public health,’ Yeager said. ‘The guidelines apply to everyone.’ When asked if she was aware of how shutting down an 11-year-old girl’s business would appear to the general public, Yeager replied, ‘People will react how they choose to react. But it is our job.’”
