Jesus put himself up as the Jewish Messiah, and was rejected. They've ALL been rejected: en.wikipedia.org But, Jesus's followers rebooted his failed candidacy into a stand-alone religion after his death, for their benefit. Since then, the church has had hundreds of years, some with COMPLETE political control, to make their bullshit make sense.
