Koan, the abolition of slavery was the direct extension of self-evident rights. Slavery was kept around because their owners decided that the rights of slaves were subordinate to the needs of southern society at the time. That's what happens when you let society determine who has rights and who doesn't. They will always vote to subjugate the minority. Thank God the concept of self-evident rights exists and is alive even today in a skeptical age where truth is relative! Tenchusatsu
