Good question. Three unique things re AK and Palin)
Fiirst, we are a very red state, but have peculiar demographics. For instance, half the population lives in Anchorage and they are more blue dems. Metropolitans. So in the 70's we were able to out campaign the pubs, plus the pubs have a tendency to run really nutsso people like Tea party Joe Miller who won pub nomination last time.
We won several governorships we shouldn't have because the pub they ran was nuts.
Shefield, Knowles, I was inner circle on that one. Cowper, that one too, but I get fucked in the end. My own fault.
Two, no one knew anything about Palin except she ran on a platform to increase oil taxes dramatically. So we were all down with that. Wally Hickle was her muse. Very right wing, but very nationalistic and he was going after the oil companies as they slighted him.
He was a rich past governor and a very powerful man. And was not in the least bit freightened by the oil guys.
So we were confused.
Politics:
3) Anchorage is sort of moderate, and the villages are sort of blue dog dems and then there is a red hot streak that runs through Fairbanks.
So it is a system that can be worked and we dems were a lot smarter than the pubs. We we smaller, but we were smarter and there was just enough room for us to manipulate for a time and we built great structures while we were there like the Permanent fund and offices of EMS and alcoholism. Womens commission, my ex was first chair, safe prisons, first class education and a computer for every kid with the oil money. Bike trails.
We knew exactly what we wanted to do and we did it. And we knew we would not be there for long, so we hurried.
The pubs only want money so we bought them off.
I had to personally fight the pubs, gangsters, oil companies and in the trenches for years. Probably gave me PTSD. Man I got beat up so badly, so many times. Only thing that saved me is you cannot remember pain-lol.
So I know what it is to fight like that. Takes a certain type. But sometimes it is the only way. I saved a lot of people lives with the systems I fought for. I am proud of that.
The reason we all go for Hillary is we know she is up to the task. Howard dean would have been a kick ass good president.
