I suspect many or most creatures could have a common ancestor and the idea doesn't bother me in the least, but it certainly isn't proved. IMO we don't really know how either life originated or how macro-evolution of completely new biological features appear. Design would account for what we see as well. And would account for some things even better than Darwinian unplanned, undirected evolution. The appearance of similar features, including similar DNA, in widely separated living creatures. Look at bio-luminescence for instance. It appears in fish, insects, fungi, among other things. Fireflies didn't inherit that trait from anglerfish, for sure.
