Just so you know, I was reviewing the thread and saw this post, somehow I missed it the day you posted it here.

I rarely play SPY, mostly play XIV and VXX when I want to take advantage of intraday swings. For the most part, they move exponentially as much as SPY. I will often flip out of one, immediately into the other if I think a turn is in place (or forming) - with a tight stop if I guess wrong.

I like the volume/liquidity these provide. VXX has gone from just under 40 to a high over 55 during the past 10 trading sessions (over 38%). When timed properly, these vehicles are awesome. Keep in mind that during the last year, since VXX is the inverse ETN, it was often hammered hard and XIV rose steadily when this happened. One of the "easiest" plays was simply to go long XIV after any substantial dip. Obviously, if you are caught in the wrong vehicle at the wrong time it can be very damaging. I very, very rarely hold these overnight.

Too early to tell if the market is rolling over or simply giving us a healthy backfill move. I know the bears are getting excited, as lately, they haven't had many weeks like the last 2.
