The data show that you are wrong. The data I have seen continues to show that Apple customers overwhelmingly stay with the superior Apple products (both in terms of OS and malware threats), that high end Android customers are switching to iOS products and that a large proportion of Android phone owners are using them pretty much as dumb phones. Apple users are more likely to stick with Apple, indeed. But the net number of people choosing Android over Apple, globally, is drastically in favor of Android and increasing. The market share numbers don't lie. (That's a public source. I have paid access to higher level data I can't share, but all large sources reflect roughly the same trends.)
Claims that iOS or Android are "superior" overall are subjective, as it depends upon what factors you value. Want something that gives options and choice? There's no doubt that Android is superior. Want something that is more tightly controlled and regulated? iOS is superior. A broader selection of apps? Android. If you're a developer and care primarily about average selling price? iOS. The perception that Android phones are "lower end" is dates back to pre-2011 when it was largely true. Today, there's no longer "fragmentation", security concerns, or cheap, poorly-performing phones using Android as there were when it was a baby. The cheapest new Android phones are just as capable as the cheapest iPhones, and on the high end, Android phones have now jumped substantially ahead, even when priced a bit cheaper.
