News below of pharma companies, including Pfizer, working together to develop combination drug treatments for cancer, including melanoma.

Pact Signed To Study Cancer Immunotherapy In Combination With Other Therapies. The Wall Street Journal (2/6, Subscription Publication) reports pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. unveiled a novel alliance with three of its competitors, Pfizer Inc., Amgen Inc. and Incyte Corp., to evaluate its cancer immunotherapy along with other treatments. Under three separate agreements, Merck’s MK-3475 would be studied in combination with therapies being developed by the three rivals. The paper says Merck and Pfizer will study the combination of their therapies for kidney cancer patients; Merck and Incyte will evaluate their combination of medicines for non-small cell lung cancer and other cancer types; while Merck and Amgen will evaluate a combination of therapies in melanoma patients.

Bloomberg News (2/5) reports the trials with its rivals “will look at whether addition of a second medicine can boost effectiveness of MK-3475.” Merck already has said “it will seek early regulatory approval for MK-3475, an experimental treatment for skin and lung cancer.” Bloomberg says Merck also plans to evaluate MK-3475 “in 20 varieties of tumors in patients to determine whether it might work against other cancers
