A new report by ABI Research reveals that not only are one in four Android devices now shipping with forked versions of the operating system which don’t offer Google’s services, but those forked systems are also the key drivers of Android’s growth.
So these "forked" (fragmented) Android systems are different enough that they don't offer Google services. To me that makes them a different OS and the continued Market Share discussion of Android vs iOS is a joke since Android includes a whole bunch of "forked" devices and barely smart phones.

In the metrics that matter, the iOS is doing just fine.

The one comparison that does make sense is Apple mobile vs. Samsung mobile. Samsung basically is Android where it counts and even they try to hack the OS to make it their own such that Google has to strong arm them to maintain some control.
