What is the combined share of BMW, Audi, Mercedes, and other premium brands as a percentage of all auto sales worldwide? I'm guessing it is higher than Apple's premium brand share in smartphones.
I like to think of Apple as being akin to Porsche. Both command the highest markup (premium/profit margin) in their field. Both have superb quality products. And both have competition that make products just as superb or even a bit better at similar or lower price points, but they have enough extremely loyal followers that enable them to carve out a niche segment of the market anyway. Macs, for example, keep plugging away after all these years, seemingly immune to the margin problems crushing profits in the PC industry. They've been able to hold onto a small segment of the market because their customers are loyal and will keep paying the premium. They will eventually do this with the iPhone, iPad, etc as well.
