Well, I detect a little bit of a tone in your post, but filtering that out, you're close to my thinking.

I'd prefer to state it as follows:

Everyone was waiting in October (actually, since 1994) for a huge market crash. So in October it starts happening and everyone sells like crazy. Then everyone realizes "Wait a minute, this isn't turning out to be a real big-time crash; rather, it's due to a very specific event: the Asian meltdown. Whew, glad it wasn't 1987 all over again. Hey, now it's time to look for some bargains -- after all, the U.S. economy is still intact. Hmmmm, which companies don't have a significant Asian exposure? Aha, AOL!"
