Yes, I look at those funds to get ideas for possible stock buys. Also, if I do hold some of their stocks, seeing that they continue to hold them gives me confidence to hold on too.

I follow several fund managers. Not sure how much of my portfolio is managed like that -- maybe 10%.

I hold about 250 positions. My holding period varies. I generally expect 2-3 years. A few stocks I've held for decades.

In my largest taxable portfolio, I've perhaps done at least as well over ten years as FPA has done (Morningstar shows $10K with them going to $21-22K). I generally use some margin, so that can, and has, affected my performance.

In my largest portfolio (IRA) I'm about 20% cash and have a lot more bond/preferred/dividend-paying stocks after 2009. Overall, I've not done as well as FPA funds in this portfolio.
