HiNet Contract Awarded to Shiva For LanRover Access Switch(R) Deployment
BEDFORD, Mass., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Shiva Corporation (Nasdaq: SHVA)
today announced the completion of the second phase of a multi-phased
contract
with Chun Hwa Telecom, the primary telecommunications carrier in Taiwan.
In
the most recent implementation, Shiva supplied additional LanRover
Access
Switches(R) to the Chun Hwa Telecom's Internet Service Provider (ISP)
arm,
HiNet. Anixter Taiwan, a division of Anixter, a major worldwide
distributor
of Shiva products, collaborated with Shiva to win the account. HiNet is
the
third-largest ISP in the world and is the largest ISP in Taiwan.
The LanRover Access Switch was chosen first for its superior stability
and
it was also singled out for transmission quality, ease of installation,
configuration, end-to-end optimization and manageability. Additionally,
Shiva's strong in-country vendor support was a key factor in HiNet's
selecting
the LanRover Access Switch.
Taiwan is acknowledged as the second fastest growing market for Internet
users in Asia Pacific today. This latest contract with Shiva will help
HiNet
boost service quality to the country's Internet user population, which
the
Taiwan government estimates will reach three million by the end of 2000.
HiNet currently has more than one million subscribers.
"As the demand in Asia for Internet access skyrockets, ISPs are forced
to
continuously build out their networks to support this need," said James
L.
Zucco, Jr., president and CEO, Shiva Corporation. "Solid network
performance
and reliability are necessities for an ISP's customers, and the LanRover
Access Switch is designed specifically to accommodate a large volume of
customers while ensuring consistent connections. The HiNet win is
significant
for Shiva, and we are looking forward to continuing to support HiNet's
expansion."
"The skyrocketing growth of HiNet in Taiwan fuels the demand for high-
performance access servers such as Shiva's LanRover Access Switch," said
Chris
Chen, general manager of Anixter Taiwan. "Anixter recommended Shiva's
LanRover Access Switch to HiNet primarily because its hardware and
operating
system, ShivOS(TM), are so robust. HiNet was looking for an access
concentrator that would not go down for 21 days. After 36 days of
testing,
the Shiva LanRover Access Switch had zero down-time and on that basis
Shiva
and Anixter won the contract."
