The people of NK are forced subjects of a dictator. I have been to both North and South Korea and the people are basically the same, same language, same cultural traditions etc. And most people on both sides of the border would think that only stupid people are religious in the modern age. The people that hand out religious brochures on the subway in Seoul or kindly referred to as simpletons and not met with any hostility. Educated Koreans realize there is not much you can do but smile and nod at them.

Russian Orthodox churches existed in the communist era right up until now during the oligarch / capitalist stage. Opposing clerics were probably killed but the basic structure of the church was state sanctioned and allowed to carry on.

I remember being in a Ukrainian Catholic village church near Truskavets in the Carpathians a few years ago and on Sunday the church was filled to capacity with people coming from miles around. The church looked brand new on the outside but had been standing for 400 years.

In Mongolia the Chinese communists killed all the Buddhist monks in the South Gobi and now their native shamanism is taking over and you see religious and holy sites coming back.
