Boston Technology Breaks Ground for New Corporate Headquarters
Expansion Provides Further Evidence of the Growing Telecommunications Industry Throughout Massachusetts
WAKEFIELD, Mass., Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Boston Technology (NYSE:BSN - news), a major global telecommunications provider of voice and Internet messaging systems and services, broke ground here today for its new 168,000 square foot corporate headquarters, being built by The Beal Companies of Boston.
The new headquarters is a sign-of-the-times statement. The Massachusetts economy, which once heavily depended upon the defense, minicomputer, and construction industries, now is reaping the benefits from thriving enterprises such as telecommunications and software.
According to a study of the telecommunications industry in Massachusetts conducted by The Massachusetts Telecommunications Council and the University of Massachusetts, telecommunications employment has grown 61 percent between 1993 and 1996. The Commonwealth has the nation's highest concentration of people employed in the two ''export'' sectors that sell products and services to customers outside of Massachusetts -- telecommunications equipment and manufacturing and telecommunications software/network integration. Additionally, within the Bay State, 2.8 percent of all jobs are related to telecommunications. This is 32 percent higher than the national average, and makes Massachusetts the leader in telecommunications employment.
Underscoring the importance of the groundbreaking ceremony, several state officials are attending, restating their pledge to continue building a strong telecommunications infrastructure within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The dignitaries include Governor Paul Cellucci, Congressman Ed Markey (invited), State Senator Richard Tisei and State Representative Brian Cresta, as well as members of the Wakefield Board of Selectman.
''The surge of the high technology industry has propelled our economy to new heights, helping to create over 330,000 jobs, and we want to continue to attract Massachusetts companies that bring the high technology, high wage jobs of the future,'' said Governor Cellucci. ''With companies like Boston Technology leading the way, Massachusetts will continue to set the standard in the telecommunications industry.''
Growth of a Local Company
The new Boston Technology headquarters is being built next to its existing facility on the shore of Lake Quannapowitt to accommodate the extraordinary growth the company has experienced since its founding in 1986. The new building will house the corporate headquarters of Boston Technology and the current building will continue to house Boston Technology's Research & Development facilities.
''This is an exciting day for Boston Technology,'' said Francis E. Girard, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boston Technology. ''We are here today because our employees, customers, and partners have provided the quality, commitment, and service that has allowed us to stand out among a crowded playing field.''
Construction of the new building is scheduled to begin in January 1998 and will be completed by January 1999.
