Thanks, Chris. I was familiar with Rogovin's work but hadn't seen it in a long time. He was what used to be a called a "concerned photographer," shooting noble photos of the working class.

You should look at the work of Vivian Maier. She was a nanny in NY and Chicago during the 50's and 60's and was an avid photo hobbyist. Her work was unknown until just recently when all her prints and negatives were discovered stored in a garage. She's a photo super-star now and the guy who found her work is now a millionaire - she's long gone - because she was a fantastic street photographer, up there with the best. Check out her portfolios. There's more than one portfolio. Put your mouse over the "portfolio" listing on the left and a window with a full list pops up. They're all excellent.
