My mom and dad dragged me to church for 15 years, even though both of them were agnostics. They wanted all us kids to be exposed to religion, is what my mom told me. She was the main force dragging us all to church, for two reasons:
1. It was like a Sunday social club for her, where she could talk with other women.
2. It made us appear to be "normal", church-going Americans
My dad, bless his heart, went because mom wanted us all to go. I quit going at 15, but shortly before I quit going, my dad took to falling asleep during the sermon and snoring loudly. Mom would wake him up, but shortly he'd do an embarrassing rerun. Once all us kids stopped going, the parents quit going as well. Mom had gone back to teaching by then, and had other social outlets than church. Dad now slept away Sunday mornings in undisturbed peace.
I don't see my family as different from most Americans. Some go for my parent's reasons, others go to get customers for their businesses, others to make connections useful in life and business. Some may even go to worship. |
