My older brother served in the Navy, pre-Vietnam. He did it because he believed national service was his duty as an American, and he wanted to see the world. He was posted to a radar base in Newfoundland, then to the Pentagon.

At the Pentagon, he had a desk in a hallway, where other servicemen would drop documents in his inbox, which he didn't read, but stamped "SECRET" on. Other servicemen would pick them up from his outbox and take them somewhere else in the Pentagon. He really liked that job, since he could just sit there and read until he had to do his stamping and transfer function on occasion. He did that for 2 years.
