Keep in mind that lots of colleges have branches on military bases. Kids can pick up their a year or two while they're in service--or at least get exposed to college work. And service straightens a lot of people out in terms of getting with a program. The military of today won't keep anyone around who doesn't get with it--just boots them back out. So for those who make the cut it has really increased their functionality in a lot of cases--imho.
