Telecom Cos. In Pact To Build China-U.S. Undersea Cable
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dow Jones)--A group of international telecommunications companies signed a construction and maintenance agreement valued at $1.1 billion to build the first undersea telecommunications cable linking China and the U.S.
In a press release Thursday, the companies, which include AT&T Corp. (T), MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC) and Sprint Corp. (FON) will build network and each member will hold an equal stake and joint financial responsibility for network oversight, maintenance and administration.
The companies said nine landing stations are planned for the network, which will have 967,680 circuits and a capacity of 80 gigabits per second, or enough to simultaneously carry 4 million phone calls.
The initial parties also signed a supply contract with Alcatel Submarine Networks, Fujitsu Ltd., KKD Submarine Cable Systems, NEC Corp. and Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. to build the network.
