The Tesla is a remarkable piece of equipment but is unlikely to succeed over the long term. It's too expensive and it's market niche is limited. If Apple really wants to position itself in the automotive market, it doesn't need to buy a car company but merely needs to make an offer no one can refuse. They can also get the jump on medical applications, especially if they work with Qualcomm, which also has established a promising position.
