There is a concept in science called Knowledge Directed Perception (KDP). What it means is you cannot see something you do not understand.

And as knowledge expands ones perception expands.

I am old, and know exactly what he is talking about, and can see you do understand him ,or see him as he is. He is outside of your perception. You need more knowledge to see him as he is. Knowledge is like getting a telescope.

So what your mind is really doing is "Gestalting" an image of him you see, which is actually, as mentioned, a caricature of him. And then you react to that.

As bold a statement as that is, it is exactly the truth.
