Great example--you have made explicit what I have assumed all along. I agree with your characterization of the situation, except the part about the existing dominant players having overbuilt their capacity--I don't think that they did that very much except in the high end; but never mind the quibble, let's stipulate (as the lawyers say) that they did this.

So how do you answer your own question? "What have we done wrong? What do we do now?" Or more importantly for this thread, how do you think the Koreans (especially) and the Japanese answer this question?

One addition: the "What have we done wrong?" question is fairly easily answered. Jumping into a business like this one, misguaging the speed of change, and the heavy ongoing capital investment and R&D demands. The other question is harder--HWP answered it a couple of years ago by getting out of the business before they got too deeply embedded. But HWP is out to MAKE money, not lose it, and not to simply provide employment for a lot people. They also don't have a government sitting behind them ready to bail them out if things go awry.
