I wouldn't be confident that switching costs are prohibitive

The main "switching cost," if you can call it that, is getting all of your buddies to move over to your new app so you can continue chatting there. There will be those who won't move because they can't get their own buddies to do so, etc., and you'll have to keep the old app to chat with them. Bottom line is you'll end up with a slew of chat apps on your device and have to toggle between them.
