This Wednesday, February 19, marked the 69th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. One of the bloodiest battles in the Pacific War and all of World War II.

Our National memorials to the USMC heroism for the Iwo Jima battle are all appropriate.

What is not widely celebrated is the bloodiest of all battles for Americans in the Pacific, the battle for Okinawa. By any measure, for America, it was the biggest island battle in the Pacific, and the landing and subsequent battle to defeat the Japanese on that island was fought primarily by the US Army.
