Broadcom is dominant no doubt.

My point is LSI needs a high volume market - cable modems are just what Ted Turner ordered. Besides this is exactly the type of chip LSI does well.

Remember in analog modems the companies like 3COM, ZOOM etc have to do the fighting and get killed with deteriorating prices etc. For the chip companies this heightened competition from the end companies is good because it converts to greater volume which spreads their fixed costs out... Besides with design shrinks they can take huge price reductions and still turn a tidy profit.

Selling the chip is not like selling the modem...

The price competition though fierce is not the end-of-the-world for the chip makers. To wit ADI announcement for 3COM (analog) system-on-a-chip modem. And MOT software modem that LSI incorporated into their cores several moons ago. There is a major market opportunity here and it would do LSI a lot of good to get a chunk of this market.

The GSM market is highly competitive. Yet LSI wants to enter that market.
