Thanks for the responses Kurt and Kelly.

The download was 1.39GB as it was updating from iOS 7.0.4. iOS 7.0.5 had not been installed previously, so perhaps that was the cause of the large size.

After the download gave error 9006 and stopped, I restarted it and it completed in less than 20 minutes.

I'm old school about updates, I prefer to do them via the cable attached to the Mac rather than over-the-air.
