I just think your contention that: because computers and devices are now cheaper people are less willing to spend a few extra bucks to buy something with quality, doesn't make sense. I think the opposite is true, the difference between a quality item that you depend on every day, and an iffy item is pretty small now, particularly amortized over a reasonable 2 year ownership period.

The operative points here are what qualifies as "a few extra bucks" and whether those extra bucks are actually getting something with higher quality. Paying $1,000 versus $700 for something you perceive as better is one thing, but paying $1,200 versus $600 isn't as easily overlooked. As a business owner, when I've looked at outfitting a room with, say 20 new computers, the $12,000 difference is a big deal. The quality analysis is key. Many view a phone like the Moto X to be of higher quality than an iPhone and yet cost much less. And others consider an iPhone to be the best phone available and will pay the premium. What matters is how those perceptions and prices evolve, and to what degree.
I don't think Google Samsung problems make Apple a buy. It has to be new products at this time. Nobody has a clue really except those at Apple.
I agree. iOS is going against all Android phones, it's not Apple versus Samsung. Samsung could fade to nothing over time and the losses could be more than filled by other manufacturers choosing Android. This move by Samsung is much more a threat to Google than it is a good thing for Apple. Samsung's woes are occurring for many of the same reasons as Apple's... Samsung is selling very nice but very high priced products in the face of extremely refined but cheaper competition. I don't think Samsung is going fare any better than Apple in continuing this practice.
