Many Hospitals and hospital chains are taking advantage of 'nonprofit' status to make huge amounts of money. They just have to plow much of it back into their operations. Hence we get hospitals with palatial decor and huge executive salaries. Very different from a few decades ago. I recall a hospital from my youth which was downright spartan. I was shocked when I visited several decades later. It was like a damn millionaire's retreat. Also noticed the management staff was all driving Lincolns, Mercedes and Caddys. Joe Bageant, did an excellent job of explaining this in his book 'Deer Hunting with Jesus'. A must-read for anyone interested in an alternative view of 'established myths'. joebageant.com amazon.com
