Ascend Supports ITU Move to Create High-Speed 56K Modem Standard

Leader in 56K Ports Expects Standard to Further Spur Demand for
Its Products

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 1997--Ascend Communications, Inc., (NASDAQ:ASND - news) announced today that
it supports the declaration of consensus on a 56Kbps modem
standard -- called V.pcm reached yesterday by a committee of the
International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Ascend, which for
some time has supported 56K technology developed by Rockwell
Semiconductor and Lucent Technologies, is the leader by a
two-to-one margin in deployment of 56K ports at ISPs worldwide.
