He doesn't realize the darkness he perceives is only the darkness he creates himself.

As he and I observe AAPL in the same room at the same time, I see a brightly lit room with AAPL as the source of light, a stock that is up 75X in the years since I bought it.

For him the room is dark, as he believes AAPL has been on the verge of failure the entire time it has been going up the same 75X.
