No, typically, the iPhone gets a $100 price drop every year. An unlocked S4 can be purchased at Amazon for $509. No one would do this, but you could buy that now and resell it to Gazelle for $209 (recouping 41%). In contrast, you could buy an unlocked iPhone 5 (or the replacement 5C) for $550 at full retail, then resell it for $250, recouping 45%. The unlocked 5S resells for 54% of its launch price.
This does not take into account that the majority of S4 owners bought the phone when it was a >$600 phone, rather than at the current close out price. Those guys are getting 34 cents on the dollar. That's a faster depreciation rate than the iPhone 5, which is 6 months older but still getting you 39% relative to the original purchase price. |
