"Uganda's Same-Day Testing Works Well for Everyone"

Since the beginning of the year, the AIDS Information Center
and the U.S. Agency for International Development have been
operating three AIDS testing sites in Uganda that provide
same-day results, According to Carl H. Campbell Jr., of the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for
HIV, STD, and TB Prevention, the program helps to ensure that
virtually everyone who is tested learns the results and receives
the necessary counseling and education, without the stress of
waiting one to two weeks. The CDC researchers found that by
using a combination of two rapid tests--Cambridge Diagnostics'
Capillus agglutination test and Trinity Biotech's SeroCard
colloidal gold assay--sensitivity and specificity levels could
reach 100 percent. Currently, Murex's Single-Use Diagnostic Test
is the only rapid test available for clinical use in the United
States, but Campbell notes that the United States may eventually
switch to a combination of rapid tests or just one rapid test.
Coinciding with the new program is an aggressive effort by the
Ugandan government to increase AIDS awareness. Data indicate
that between 80 percent and 99 percent of the population knows
about HIV and understands it is transmitted through sexual contact.
