Altomare schemed to artificially inflate the share price and trading volume of stock for a publicly traded company then known as Sunset Brands, Inc., according to officials. He agreed to pay a former business associate to purchase shares of Sunset Brands' stock to give the false impression that there was a public market for the stock.

His associate, however, was an informant for the FBI, according to the release. Unknowingly, his conversations about bolstering the fraudulent buying program were being recorded. In the meantime, Altomare released multiple press releases about how well his company was doing in an attempt to conceal the market manipulation scheme from regulatory authorities, officials said.
